Beware of Malicious Mobile Applications Scams

Cybercriminals spread free malicious mobile applications (e.g., TV live streaming, entertainment, device cooling, phone booster/overheating fixes) outside official stores such as Google Play or Apple App Store. Victims are tricked into downloading them via malicious application links, fake websites or social media platforms.

Signs to Watch

  • Apps offered outside official stores
  • Prompts to install applications via links, websites or social media platforms
  • Promises of free premium features
  • Fake debit transaction notifications
  • Requests for excessive permissions (SMS, accessibility, etc.)
  • Sudden phone lag, overheating or frequent ads
  • Messages on social media platforms asking you to install applications

How to Protect Yourself?

  • Install apps only from official stores (Google Play / App Store)
  • Do not install apps from links shared via messages, websites or social media platforms
  • Be cautious of apps claiming free premium features
  • Deny unnecessary permissions, especially for unknown apps
  • Ignore fake alerts and pop-ups
  • Keep your device and apps updated
  • Do not grant screen-sharing or remote-control access to unknown persons or applications while using mobile banking services.
  • Always enable built-in security features such as app protection, device lock (PIN/biometric), application verification, and operating system security updates.
  • Avoid rooted / jailbroken devices for mobile banking application.
  • Recognize lure tactics: Free offers are often used to spread malware.

Remember

  • Official app stores are the safest source for downloads
  • Never trust unknown links or unsolicited app recommendations
  • Excessive permissions are a major red flag
  • Fake apps can steal your personal and banking data
  • Staying alert is the first line of defence against cyber fraud
